Quote of the day: "102.1 Harmison to Ponting, no run, wide and Ponting has to stretch to reach it. "Harmison couldn't hit an elephant from 20 paces?" was Jeff Thomson's assessment earlier. Guess it depends on the size of the elephant." - baggygreen.com

He's a doctor... And a Ninja! What're the best comics on the internet?

If I could draw, I'd be a webcomic artist.

However I can't draw, so instead I spend my time admiring webcomic artists. Yet what I've come to notice is that the style of comics people respond to are quite varied and highly subjective.

As a result I've decided to add a new section to mediated.com.au, webbed. The corner of the world devoted to all things electronic and intangible. The meeting place of the world wide web (well its definitely not THAT predominant on the internet but you get my drift.)

And what better way to kick off than by sharing my top 3 web comics which allow my week to tick over a little easier.

BRONZE MEDAL CTRL ALT DEL
Davan - The Housemate from hell2

The webcomic that invented Winter-een-xmas, the national holiday week dedicated to gamers, this series by Tim Buckley never fails to get a good belly laugh from me. In many respects I see it as a warning to keep my life balanced otherwise I could end up like Davan. Crazed, entirely self absorbed, naive yet quirkily brilliant. Home of my favourite reanimated XBox robot Zeke complete with a good and evil switch.

Sometimes I find the comic a touch too random, but maybe that's because I'm trying too hard to hold onto my sanity.

SILVER MEDAL Dr McNinja
There's Ninjas, and Pirates, and Evil McDonalds Clowns! What more could you want?

I do believe the image caption sums up the joy of Dr McNinja perfectly. Ninjas, Pirates, Clowns, and constant references to Batman, its a teenage dream comic.

Personally I quite enjoy the fact that Dr McNinja is inked like a traditional comic then scanned for the internet. Tradition has its values sometimes. What I truly admire is it's tightrope balance between action and the absurd. Continual references to Gen Y childhood pepper this clever intertextual piece. But ultimately it's never to show off, rather it's always to achieve a laugh.

GOLD MEDAL The Order of The Stick
If I only had a brain...

Oots, as the comic is affectionately known by its regulars is a self-referential Dungeons and Dragons spoof comic.

Initially it relied on parodying weird rulesets and D& injokes to get its laughs, however Rick Burlew has greatly expanded the reportoire of this comic to include references to Monty Python, Mission Impossible and many many more.

The simply drawn characters hide just how clever and complex this comic is. I check the internet every day to see if this comic has been updated and I'm never dissapointed.

Well thats the whole shebang, the top 3 of internet comics by mediated.com.au. Whilst I seldom ask for comments, I'd really love to hear your thoughts on the top 3. In particular if you have a favourite that was unjustly overlooked then drop the URL down and I look forward to checking out it.

All the best

[edit] I've decided not to be lazy, especially because the cricket is still at lunch, so here are some links for those of you who want to take a mozy:

Ctrl Alt Del

Order of the Stick

Dr McNinja

And some honorable mentions:

Penny Arcade

Something Positive

I look forward to the Orble world stopping in its tracks as well all run off to enjoy offsite content

In my daily regiment of webcomic needs, I real Ctrl Alt Del, Penny Arcade, Questionable Content and I used to read Concerned, but that's finished since. Penny Arcade has lowered in quality lately, but Questionable Content is still at the top of its game. I've read Dr McNinja a little and it has its funny bits, but I actually find it boring after a while.

That's fair enough, I think its a bit more of a patient comic where it'll be happy to spend a couple of pages building up to the punchline instead of other comics that need a punchline for the end of each strip.

I've heard alot about Penny Arcade but haven't found my way there, I'll definitely have to make an effort to now.

I love CAD!

Heres one of my faveourite standalone strips:

That last line got me cracking up so badly...
4. November 22nd 2006 @ 23:35. Stuart Says:
I'd forgotten about that strip,

Cheers for reminding me

My faveourite subplot was when Ted was supposedly made into a stew and eaten by ethan... that had the most sickeningly funny end...
6. November 22nd 2006 @ 23:39. Stuart Says:
I loved it when Zeke got blown up.

That sounds a bit morbid on its own, but the cartoon where Davan needs cheering up and puts the XBox controller in his girlfriends belly button had me in stitches
7. November 22nd 2006 @ 23:41. Ahmed Says:
Davan? erm... isn't his name ethan?
8. November 22nd 2006 @ 23:50. Stuart Says:
Whoops, getting it confused with Something Positive.

My bad, trying to write these things at work means my brain is being stretched in too many directions at once.

Something Positive is another very good webcomic too, defintely in my top 5. Choo choo the boneless bear comes close to rivalling Zeke in the best non-human character catergory

White Ninja is one of the best. So funny. The only other webcomic I've liked completely is The Perry Bible Fellowship.

Penny Arcade goes alright sometimes.

I hate Questionable Content.
10. November 23rd 2006 @ 01:18. Jimbo Says:
Really? Why do you hate it?
11. November 23rd 2006 @ 01:22. Luke Says:
- lame
- tries too hard to be funny
- not funny in the slightest
- soap opera aspect

sorry, but you asked! haha
12. November 23rd 2006 @ 01:26. Jimbo Says:
Heh, nah that's fine. Your opinion. I do agree with you on the soap opera aspect - sometimes it feels like there are quite a few too many strips in a sequence going absolutely nowhere. My favourite ones are those with the robots, then again it sort of defeats the purpose, because in that regard they're a little too similar to CAD and PA.
13. November 23rd 2006 @ 01:27. Luke Says:
yeah I don't really have the stamina to keep up with storylines in web comics, I prefer single comics that are only connected to themselves. IE. The Perry Bible Fellowship!

I adore CAD and Dr McNinja. I've never looked at Order of the Stick, I'll have to check it out.
15. November 23rd 2006 @ 02:29. Cibbuano Says:
Stuart, how about some links to some of the best ones - just so we can have a test drive?

I love CAD, to the point where I went into the archive and read every single one. That made me feel ill, though.

From my hometown, Bob the Angry Flower is surreal and amazing:

The Hat of Love

Invisible Cow

Bees and Flowers

Kenny Rogers!

God, those a strange and funny.

Cib - But but the cricket is on......

I promise the minute the cricket stops being entertaining I'll do the legwork, but I've waited 15 months for the ashes!!
17. November 23rd 2006 @ 02:57. Cibbuano Says:
when the cricket stops being entertaining?

aren't the games 3 days long?

18. November 23rd 2006 @ 02:59. Stuart Says:
5 days - All good

Anyways I realised I was being lazy and fixed it up, so you have hyperlinks at the end of the article.

If anyone would like their favourite added please leave a comment and why you think it should be added and I'll be happy to
19. November 23rd 2006 @ 03:07. Stuart Says:
On a side note,

I can't believe I missed the Damien Martyn wicket to put up those hyperlinks, so I hope you all enjoy it!!!

Now back to the cricket
20. November 23rd 2006 @ 03:54. Anonymous Says:
Test cricket rules.

I'm so going to look at the Dr Mc Ninja comic and I know someone who would love to have a read too.

Personally I find it hard at times reading comics on the net, much prefer the paper in my hand method but I understand that in todays world it's easier for smaller companies/creators etc to get noticed.

I DON'T KNOW IF ANYONE'S WRITTEN THIS YET, BUT...

WHITE NINJA COMICS GETS MY GOLD MEDAL!

It's the funniest, most random stuff!
23. November 23rd 2006 @ 21:31. Luke Says:
Yeah I mentioned White Ninja before, but nobody took notice. GOOD WORK ALWAYS EIGHTEEN!

(PS. I think you should check out http://pbfcomics.com/ if you like White Ninja)
24. November 23rd 2006 @ 21:49. Stuart Says:
Haha sorry Luke,

I should probably put a disclaimer on my site that everything I do will be distracted whilst the Ashes are on
25. November 24th 2006 @ 06:24. JoshZ Says:
Big lover of CAD, User Friendly, Sluggy Freelance, Real Life, TSOALR, Sheldon, VG Cats, Penny Arcade and I, like the first guy, also read Concerned while it was going.

YOU JUST GOT FROHMED!

I even bought my youngest brother a shirt from CAD for his birthday. His name is also Ethan and he loves the comic more than me. I have heard his plans for Wintereenmass.
