PM to relax new IR laws - Fears of unfair dismissal
Canberra: Workplace relations minister Kevin Andrews has announced a new package of ammendments to the government's controversial IR legislation, just one day before a High Court decision determining the legality of the industrial relations changes.
The two headline changes to the IR legislation involve the reinstituted ability to cash out sick leave or carers' leave and employers newfound power to cashout sick workers.
"We're just trying to even the scales, businesses shouldn't have to pay for workers made redundant during low periods of work or negative circumstances." Mr Andrews said, "After all if they can sack you at will you should be happy they can just temporarily lay you off now, you might even only get a pay cut!"
Howard was more tactful in introducing the changes to the media, "Personally I can understand the workers. It's not easy doing your job wondering when the axe will fall and sever your employment. Why if Bush and Blair are in trouble then I better make sure you need a damn good reason to fire me. Rights for the workers I say."
When questioned if politicians can be laid off during their 'low times' of 225 non sitting days, the PM cooly responded, "Well that's a very good question, and I'd love to reply after we announce another set of IR changes."
Kevin Andrews was sacked that afternoon.
The new minister for workplace relations Andrew O'Keefe has already changes the marketing for the portfolio to the minister for work 'deal or no deal'.
